Day 12

Day 12

Today was just as sweet as the other days. I'm getting very close to finishing my app. I just have to add a few more things and finalize my project. I just found out that we had to design a web page for our app though, and I hope I have enough time to do that. I bet the google employees will be happy once were gone because we eat all their food and are always playing rock band when they want to. Oh well, they have it nice there anyways. They eat better than the Libby Hall guy! And he eats goood.

Day 12

Day 12

Today we did the same thing as yesterday, except I ran into more snags, which sucks. I'm still trying to figure out how to get my fish to swim in the water. Today we got to play cod, which was sweeet. Except zombies wasn't unlocked so I got mad. We had a cooler presentation today from the google guys, this dude was a pimp. I'm excited to go home though, just so I can chill out.

Day 11

Day 11, Google Day 1

This place is so sweet. Its like a huge hang out. The work days are good because you can do your own stuff whenever you want to. Theres really not much to say except that today was super awesome.

my manifesto thing

manifesto

For my project, I am adapting the ice melting app. I plan on incorporating an intro animation, side graphics, an extension on the math of some sort ( maybe having the user convert the units themselves), and changing the programming to allow my side graphics and intro to function. This app will teach people a real-life application of unit conversion. If reteaching this application, it would provide a great example of art and the programming behind it, along with showing how math can be used when making and using such applications. It would be enjoyable because most of it is up to your creative imagination. It will surely turn out with the appearance of art that draws people in, but the complexity behind it that keeps people using the app.

Art

In my app, I plan on having an extensive art portion. With the app beginning with an intro animation that depicts the icebergs starting to melt, the whole thing will be created with Flash. It should cover pretty much all the techniques that we learned in our various lessons. I plan on having side graphics like fish swimming whenever the water rises. i believe by the time it is complete, the art portion will have been successfully transformed into my own original take of it. In real-world terms, this app is based on Global Warming. It shows the scientific problem of the polar ice caps melting and flooding the earth. The art will draw people into the application so they can enjoy it.

Math

My application deals with unit conversion and units of measure in general. If asked, I would say that units of measure are ways to measure and label your measurements so they can be read, understood, and recreated. Then, with those units, you sometimes need to convert them to other units so they can be understood in a different context. With this knowledge of math, you can understand how to measure in the world, a skill that is used daily by almost every profession. here is an example of unit conversion:

24 hours/ x 60 min/ x 60 sec/ = 86400 seconds
1 1 hour 1 min

This application should help people grasp the concept of units.

Programming

The program I am developing behind my application brings all of my other developments to life. It allows the user to interact with the application and dictate the amount of water that rises. Also, the program allows me to navigate my way through my animations so that the user can understand what I am trying to depict because things are in the right order. I need this code to switch between scenes in my intro animation.

MovieClip(root).gotoAndPlay(2);

this next code allows the program to recalculate the height of the ice based on the inputed text by the user.

function recalculateHeight(evt:MouseEvent) : void {

var percent:int = int(txtPercentMelted.text);

Programming is probably the most vital part of any application, because without it, your art wont move and your math cannot be experienced byu the user.

Day 10

Day 10

Today I got my ass whooped in ultimate frisbee again. Graham and John shouldnt be allowed to be on the same team, since theyre both college kids. We had an awesome lunch at The Sink, they had some really good pizza. When we were done, we had free work day and I made a cool animation for the start of my program, it has a huge iceberg. Hopefully i can get randall to help me since hes the boss. Like in the SNL song, like a boss. thats Randall. Hes my hero.

Day 9

Day 9

I officially have 4 people following my blog (cue the rapid decline in social status). Today was good, I found out that Randall is the messiah of all things in Illustrator. My programming portion came out great even though I didnt really add anything to it. I've pretty much decided that I want to do the ice melting app for my final project but we'll see when we get to sign up. I wanted to have a short animation of ice cracking and melting or something beforehand like an intro to the application, but who knows if I could actually pull that off. I started to animate an iceberg but it's not looking so hot. No pun intended.

DAY 8

Day 8

I don't feel like blogging today but I made a cow launcher. Not my favorite lab alteration but it was cool. The engineering building was sweeeeet. The Rube golberg machine was the tightest thing I've ever seen. And....nick sucks. Don't tell him I blogged that.

Day 7

Day 7

Today I realized that Carson beats me at everything in this class. So my new goal is to make something cooler than his apps. But anyways, we took a dorm room tour that was cool, but the lady was all excited about strict rules so she wasnt cool. I also made a really raunchy population doubler with babies.

Day 6

Day 6

Today I whooped Nick's ass in the zombie themed face off of our lab. Mine was way better. Time really flew today and I had a ton of fun. The tour of the ATLAS building was sweet since I'm so interested in film studies. Maybe I'll come to CU and study here but who knows. I really want to create an animation that I can put at the beginning of my movies that says the production name, that would be sweet.

Day 5

Day 5

Today was really really frustrating at times. We had to write a Knol about something and my entire thing got deleted twice. So when I came back from lunch and it was gone, I got pretty pissed off. But I finished, I just had to spend a bunch of my free time rewriting the stupid thing I had already written. Anyways, I'm glad its Friday so I can sleep tomorrow morning. Today we had a good lunch, except my panini was super huge. The math portion was cool because we got M & Ms that reproduced together. Also, I got the Swine Flu from Graham. Heres a link to my Knol and I hope I never have to make one again.

My Knol (you better like it, because it took me so long to make.)

Day 4

Day 4

Today, I changed my whole app to resemble a pirate boat and a pirate instead of the Statue of Liberty. It's cool because I can do what everyone else does, but make my own little version of it. Its more for to make the experience more unique and individual. Today we had a great lunch and got to go outside. We always joke around and say that you would hate this camp if you hated sandwiches. But I love sandwiches so no worries. Every day goes by faster and is more fun. I don't fall behind in the programming part anymore. It's cool.

Day 3

Day 3

Today was good because I added my little elf man into our labs and had him jump around and stuff, it was pretty cool. Only got to add one dialogue line to my own project today because it was so busy. The days are feeling sorter and shorter, except for the math part. Just because its all review for algebra 2 and stuff but its alright. I'm learning more and more and having tons of fun. And once again, I want one of these laptops for myself. But I won't steal them, don't worry.

Day 2

Day 2

Today was a lot better in terms of how much I understood and how well I followed along. However, I hate those damn compiler errors. I made a dude in a wheelchair and an elf that had an adventure in my spare time. My first cartoon, it's still a work in progress though. Hopefully we get to start our own labs and stuff soon, even though I assume that we don't know much at all. I want to have adobe flash at my house so I can mess around on it all day. My first program for the inflation worked out well but the second had a few problems with it. I'll figure it out tomorrow.

Day 1

Day 1

We came and did the usual icebreaker stuff that accompanies these sort of camps. I was surprised to see that SC had 4 people here. I think that this should be pretty cool once we get to make our own animations and stuff. I look forward to using the various programs like flash and illustrator. We had a good lunch and stuff, apparently they are throwing down a bunch of money for this camp because all our food an stuff is pretty nice. Plus we got these huge bags full of stuff like water bottles and t shirts. I probably going to look weird walking away from this place because it kind of looks like a purse. I came in here not really knowing what exactly we were going to be doing, but I know now and it's pretty exciting. Plus I get lots of chedda for doing this.
